The elementary program of the American International School in Cyprus includes children in Pre-Kindergarten at 3 years old, through grade five at 10 years old. Students are assigned to specific grade levels based on entrance requirements, chronological age, aptitude, and emotional and physical maturity.
Each elementary teacher creates an environment favorable to learning and personal growth. Class sizes are small with an average of 15 students in each class. Each grade is self-contained, and opportunities are provided within the classroom setting for individual and small group work as well as whole group instruction.
Students are instructed in all academic areas with emphasis on the basic skills, especially language arts and math. We use American reading materials and a wide range of supplementary resources, including leveled books. Our classes are well-resourced with manipulative materials, audio-visual resources and computers linked to the main network. Students receive weekly instruction in art, music, computer education and physical education as well as paying regular visits to the library. Special teachers provide instruction in these areas. From Grade One at six years old, Greek speaking children can study Greek as a First Language. From Grade Three at 8 years old, the students study French as a second language.
Standard of Conduct for Elementary: The 4 'B's
AIS Cyprus’ code of behavior for our elementary students centers on the four 'B's. At the beginning of the school year, the children discuss the four 'B's with their teachers and learn of their importance whether they are on a school bus, at the Big Toy area, in the cafeteria, or in the classroom.
The four 'B's are:
- Be Respectful
- Be Safe
- Be Ready
- Be Helpful
This year, we added a fifth B: Be Healthy!
Each elementary child has the right to be treated fairly and with respect.
The following school rules are intended to point out what the school expects of students who attend AISC.
*Come to school prepared to work
*Complete homework and class assignments to the best of her/his ability
*Demonstrate a proper respect for teachers and other members of the school staff
*Respect school property and property belonging to others
*Be honest, trustworthy, and truthful
*Respect the rights, beliefs, and attitudes of fellow students
*Be regular and punctual in attendance
Homework
The purpose of homework is to reinforce skills that have been taught in the classroom. The process of completing homework and bringing it to class provides valuable lessons in organization and responsibility.
Students in each elementary grade receive, on average, the following amount of homework:
Grade K5 20 minutes
Grade 1 15-30 minutes Grade 4 45-60 minutes
Grade 2 20-40 minutes Grade 5 50-75 minutes
Grade 3 30-50 minutes
Library Time
The AISC Library is a special place where all children love to spend their time. The Librarian coordinates lessons with classroom teachers to provide optimum support materials and ideas. Library time is an important time in each elementary child's week. Children come to the library to hear the latest story read and are allowed to check-out books to take home. Parents are invited to come in to check out books whenever they wish to. The library is open until 4pm every day after school except for Wednesdays. The Library contains a computer lab of its own and we are well-resourced with on-line encyclopedia and publications.
